A second-generation miner, Randy started coal mining in alongside his brothers more than 20 years ago. On his first trip into the mine he wondered “Why am I here?” Although Randy has had a few minor injuries and says the pay is great for the area, mining has taken a serious toll on his health. He’s been diagnosed with black lung and has suffered three heart attacks. Randy has a son who trying to get a job at the mines, and he has serious misgivings about his son entering the profession.
